Internships

Begining May 18, 2008 we will be hosting interns. We have intern opportunities in two different formats.

The first is a two month onsite Permaculture intensive training. We offer the certification without financial charge in return for your efforts to move onsite projects forward. You are welcome to eat anything that grows on the property, but otherwise must provide your own food. In our intensive you will get over 72 hours of theoretical and classroom discourse on permaculture systems theory, as well as hands on practicum which will reinforce the theory learned in course study sessions. There are also regular trips to the river for swimming, nearbly wilderness areas for hiking and acres of land to retreat into and watch nature unfold.

We offer the training without charge: Why pay to make improvements to do someones chores or make improvements to their property? Most permaculture courses cost $900-$1200 for a 2-3 week session. Internships often charge hundreds of dollars a month. Tom Sawyer charged friends and neighbors alike a pirates ransom for the priveledge of whitewashing his Aunt Polly's fence. Here you buy only your own food, experience direct hands practicum, share commons and intimate meals with the insturctor/s, and walk away with practicable knowledge- and not a penny paid to Abundance.

We have room for up to 4 people concurrently; please contact us if you are interested in this training.

Our second internship Offering is for a Farm Manager intern. This position begins rather like the above internship. However, having a person around over the long haul to be a partner in management and stewardship is key to developing a good system on the farm site. Deston has to travel for work and teaching, and the chickens need to be fed in his absence, gardens need watering, etc. After the initial two month period and permaculture certification, and provided a clear commitment and investment in moving projects forward is demonstrated, the Farm Manager intern will recieve a living stipend to cover basic food costs, "and then some"- were not setting up a fuedal system, so we share pretty well. Couples are welcome to co-apply for this position, though currently we are not accepting applications from parents with children, primarily owing to rudimentary and rugged nature of the site.

Living at Abundance

Abundance is in its early development. Actually 2 parcels, it has two related but different stories. The farm site was once a homestead, and then a pig farm; the old farm house burned down in fall of 1997. The owners used 2 acres of the site, where the old pig barns are, to depot home salvage from deconstruction and remodel projects. This is also where the annual gardens are located. Accomodations are primative, and camping is the general accomodation. We use a composting humanure system, have running water and a hottub setup, as well as a functional indoor kitchen in the office, and a cob oven.

Currently Deston is remodeling one of the pig barns into an office suite and guest area with materials salvaged from the other outbuildings. The second parcel that composes the site is regenerating forest lands with timber ranging from 18-50 years. We are developing this stand as a secondary forest products management unit and habitat refuge. Our onsite activities are hosted by the proposed Columbia West Permaculture Institute (CWPI), which is developing a calendar of events for the coming 2008 summer and fall sessions. In the galleries you will find examples of the work of CWPI at Abundance.

We also have an offsite Aikido Program, and will offer classes onsite to interns.
